Studying everyday eye movements could aid in diagnosis of neurological disorders

Friday, August 31, 2012

Researchers at the University of Southern California have devised a method for detecting certain neurological disorders through the study of eye movements.

In a study published today in the Journal of Neurology, researchers claim that because Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD) each involve ocular control and attention dysfunctions, they can be easily identified through an evaluation of how patients move their eyes while they watch television.

"Natural attention and eye movement behavior ? like a drop of saliva ? contains a biometric signature of an individual and her/his state of brain function or dysfunction," the article states. "Such individual signatures, and especially potential biomarkers of particular neurological disorders which they may contain, however, have not yet been successfully decoded."

Typical methods of detection ? clinical evaluation, structured behavioral tasks and neuroimaging ? are costly, labor-intensive and limited by a patient's ability to understand and comply with instructions. To solve this problem, doctoral student Po-He Tseng and Professor Laurent Itti of the Department of Computer Science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, along with collaborators at Queen's University in Canada, have devised a new screening method.

Participants in the study were simply instructed to "watch and enjoy" television clips for 20 minutes while their eye movements were recorded. Eye-tracking data was then combined with normative eye-tracking data and a computational model of visual attention to extract 224 quantitative features, allowing the team to use new machine learning techniques to identify critical features that differentiated patients from control subjects.

With eye movement data from 108 subjects, the team was able to identify older adults with Parkinson's Disease with 89.6% accuracy, and children with either ADHD or FASD with 77.3% accuracy.

Providing new insights into which aspects of attention and gaze control are affected by specific disorders, the team's method provides considerable promise as an easily-deployed, low-cost, high-throughput screening tool, especially for young children and elderly populations who may be less compliant to traditional tests.

"For the first time, we can actually decode a person's neurological state from their everyday behavior, without having to subject them to difficult or time-consuming tests," Itti said.

India quarterly growth seen as worst in three years

India is expected Friday to announce its worst quarterly economic growth figures in three years, with economists saying there is scant hope for a swift turnaround in Asia's third-biggest economy.

India, which once aspired to double-digit expansion, has been hit hard by declining investor confidence, subdued demand and prolonged political logjam that has stalled key reforms.

"The current slowdown is broad-based, and we see little on the horizon to lift growth from its current path," said Glenn Levine, senior economist at Moody's Analytics.

Levine expects growth of 5.2 percent for the first financial quarter of 2012-13, a shade lower than the consensus market forecast of 5.3 percent.

The figures for the three months to June, set to be announced at 0530 GMT, were expected to deepen the gloom surrounding the Asian giant.

The projected expansion would be the weakest since the last fiscal quarter of 2008-09 when the economy logged 3.5 percent growth.

While five percent-plus expansion would be hailed as strong in Western nations, Indian policymakers say the country needs double-digit growth to create jobs for hundreds of millions of young workers.

The government -- damaged by a series of corruption scandals -- is struggling to introduce economic reforms in parliament that are seen as key to spurring the economy.

But the legislature has been deadlocked by opposition demands for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to quit over an alleged government giveaway of billions of dollars in coal mining rights to private firms.

India's once booming industrial sector is in crisis, with output contracting by a shock 1.8 percent in June. Overseas investor confidence has also tumbled, as shown by figures for foreign direct investment for the quarter to June, which slid year-on-year by 67 percent to $4.43 billion.

It remains "unclear what the government can do in the next three to six months" to improve the situation, said Siddhartha Sanyal, chief India economist at Barclays Capital.

Global rating agencies have lowered their outlook on India's investment-grade rating amid rising worries about the government's deteriorating finances.

The Reserve Bank of India has also warned that prospects are unlikely to improve in the near-term, due to high inflation, the lack of reforms and the impact of weak monsoon rains on farm output.

While other banks globally have been easing rates to revive their troubled economies, India's policymakers have kept borrowing costs on hold since April -- when it cut them for the first time in three years by 50 basis points.

Business leaders and industry have been clamouring for coordinated action by the government and the central bank to stimulate growth.

But the government has no fiscal room to spur the economy and the bank says a cut in subsidies to close India's gaping deficit and revival of reforms are needed to remove chronic bottlenecks and pave the way for lower rates.

India's economy is expected to grow by 6.7 percent in this fiscal year, according to a forecast by an advisory panel to the prime minister, but many economists say that is overly optimistic.

"The mood is downbeat and people have no hope left from the government," said Jigar Shah, head of research at Kim Eng Securities.

"The only positive (aspect) is that things possibly cannot get worse."

When I was in fourth grade, Santa (my mom) dropped Ultimate Hip Hop Party 1998 in my stocking. He (she) probably shouldn't have done that because there was some really profane stuff on there. For example, "Doin' It" by LL Cool J. But there was also this classic track by Monica. More »

In this photo taken Dec. 15, 2010, Muslim religious leader Said Afandi speaks at a council of Dagestan's peoples assembly in the regional capital Makhachkala, in the Caspian Sea province of Dagestan, southern Russia. Officials in Russia's violence-plagued Dagestan say a top Muslim religious leader and five of his followers have been killed by a suicide bomber. A spokesman for the republic's police said the female bomber blew herself up at the home of Said Afandi in the village of Chirkei. Afandi was a leader of Sufi Muslims and had often publicly criticized the Wahhabi sect that is the core of the insurgency in the republic. (AP Photo/Sergei Rasulov/NewsTeam)

(AP) ? Russian police on Wednesday identified the female suicide bomber who killed an influential Muslim leader in the volatile province of Dagestan in a terrorist attack that could worsen a longstanding confrontation between radical Islamists and moderate Muslims in the Caucasus region.

Said Afandi, 75, was the powerful leader of a Sufi Muslim brotherhood in Dagestan whose tens of thousands of followers include influential officials, clerics and businessmen. Afandi was killed Tuesday along with six other people, including an 11-year-old boy and a woman, in the central village of Chirkei after the bomber disguised as a pilgrim approached him in his house.

Police in Dagestan said Wednesday that the bomber was Aminat Kurbanova, a 30-year-old resident of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala. The Interfax news agency claimed she was an ethnic Russian woman who had converted to Islam after marrying an Islamist militant.

Afandi's killing follows a string of attacks on moderate Muslim leaders in the Caucasus who have publicly denounced the spread of radical Islamic groups known as Salafis whose followers advocate an independent state, or emirate, that would include Caucasus and parts of southern Russia that contain a significant Muslim population.

Afandi had recently initiated peace talks between Sufis and Salafis.

Dagestan, a multiethnic and predominantly Muslim province of nearly 3 million people on the oil-rich Caspian Sea, is a focal point of the Islamic insurgency in the Caucasus, and shootings, bombings and police operations against rebels occur there almost daily. Human rights groups accuse security forces and police of fueling the insurgency through extrajudicial killings, abductions and other abuses.

The mystical Muslim orders of Sufis have for centuries been popular in Dagestan and neighboring provinces of Russia's Caucasus region, and their leaders and adherents survived decades of Communist persecution. The Sufi brotherhoods are fiercely opposed to radical and militant Salafis that have mushroomed across the region. The Sufis often pray over the tombs of revered saints, and Salafi puritans condemn worshipping over graves as idolatry.

Tens of thousands of people attended Afandi's funeral Tuesday, and thousands more flocked to his grave Wednesday to pray as Dagestan's secular authorities declared a day of mourning.

The killing of the white-bearded cleric, who appeared in public wearing a traditional hat made of astrakhan lamb fur, could lead to more violence in Dagestan and the Caucasus, experts say.

"These are attempts to abort peacekeeping efforts in the region and to escalate the situation in southern Russia," Ruslan Gereyev of the Center of Islamic Studies in Dagestan's provincial capital, Makhachkala, told the Kavkazsky Uzel online publication.

If the killing goes unpunished, the authority of Afandi's influential followers will be questioned, said Alexei Malashenko of the Carnegie Moscow center. "If the main figure is killed and his followers are silent, this will lead to a major reappraisal of values" in Dagestan, he told The Associated Press.

Female suicide bombers are often called "black widows" in Russia because many of them are the wives, or other relatives, of militants who have been killed by security forces. Some women are driven more by personal revenge for slain relatives than by promises of martyrdom and reward in the afterlife, while others are sent on such attacks against their will, experts say.

In April 2010, two women from Dagestan blew themselves up on Moscow's subway system, killing 40 people and wounding 121 during a morning rush hour.

Dreena Burton's Plant-Powered Lunchbox ... - In a Vegetarian Kitchen

GD Star Rating
loading...

Vegan Coconut Banana muffinsThis post is excerpted from Dreena Burton?s Plant-Powered Kitchen. For the entire article, with lots more tips and photos, go to Vegan Children at School and Packing Plant-Powered Lunches.?Here are some great ideas for lunch meals you can prepare for your children.

Wraps. Wraps are easy for the kids to eat, and can be filled with ?ingredients, such as baked beans, refried beans, chickpeas, lentils and other beans, corn, chopped or grated raw veggies], whole grains, and/or ?chopped leftover baked or roasted potatoes. Also, wraps are a good way to sneak in veggies they might not otherwise eat, plus other nutritional add-ins such as tahini and nutritional yeast. ?Use whole-grain tortillas, nori, or ? if your kids are green leafy stars ? wrap fillings in kale or collard leaves.

Bean Dips ? and yes, Hummus! Typically I make triple (or quadruple) batches of hummus, and freeze one or more containers. Hummus?(more recipes in my books too)?thaws brilliantly ? just takes a little time ? so give this time-saver tip a try. ?Not just for dipping with pitas and ?veggies, hummus can also be used in sandwiches as a spread, in wraps, as a layer on pizzas to hold veggies, or even mixed with grains such as rice or into pasta. Hummus is truly a lunch lifesaver. Make it your friend (and make it yourself; it?s much cheaper and far tastier).

?PB&J?. ?I doubt any schools still allow peanut butter. But some allow nuts, and if not, seeds are usually permitted. So, try different nut and seed butters in sandwiches. ?Since seed butters can be bitter, try adding ground cinnamon to make them naturally sweeter, and a splash of pure maple syrup. dAlso, look into organic soy nut butter spreads? there are even varieties that contain cocoa, for a special treat. Use with whole-grain breads, crisp breads, pitas, tortillas, etc.

Soups and Stews: Soups make a hearty, satisfying lunch for your kids. If you didn?t get to batch-cooking on the weekend, there are some wholesome store-bought alternatives that are also timesavers. I often like to add some cooked beans or whole grains to these soups, to boost the nutritional value. ?I have many hearty soups in my books. ?Some kiddo faves are One While Chick Soup and Mellow Sniffle Lentil Soup from?Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan, and Tomato Lentil Soup with Cumin and Fresh Dill?(doesn?t sound kid-friendly, but is!) and ?Kids? Cheesy Chickpea and White Beans Soup? in Let Them Eat Vegan?(and more examples to follow).

Sauce It Up!: ?Kids love to dip and dunk, so send small containers with lids filled with some of their fave sauces, like tahini or other seed/nut-based sauce, tomato sauce, ?KD Dip?, or a homemade sauce/salad dressing, or maybe a container with nutritional yeast for sprinkling! ?Our girls love nutritional yeast mixed with tahini sauce? whatever works, right? ?And, our girls do not really love pasta (tomato) sauce. ?But, if I add in a splash of balsamic vinegar, they enjoy it much more! ?All these sauces can also be used to mix into whole grains or pasta, along with veggies/seeds/beans/tofu, etc. As I often say ?a sauce makes a meal?!

Grain Bowls: Much like how most vegan restaurants have a ?Buddha Bowl?, you can make something similar for lunches. ?This is where batch-cooking comes in handy. ?Cook more grains than you need for a given meal, so you have extra stored in the fridge during the week. Start with a whole grain/pseudo-grain ? quinoa, millet, brown rice, wild rice, etc ? and add in fave veggies (I use frozen peas a lot ? simply thaw in a bowl of boiled water, then drain and toss in) ? or even fruits like chopped grapes or berries, along with any other nutrient-dense add-ins like hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, beans, tempeh cubes, etc. ?Here is where you can add some of those zippy sauces! ?Pack in a sealed container with a fork/spoon ? read to go!

Pasta with peas by Dreena BurtonPasta Bowls: Much of what you can do with a grain bowl works equally well for leftover pasta. ?I always cook extra pasta (either whole-wheat, kamut, or brown rice), and store in a container in the fridge. ?When making lunches, the pasta will be a little tough/chewy after refrigerating (especially brown rice pasta). ?Simply place in a big bowl, cover with boiled water, then drain after a minute. ?It will soften the pasta again, and also make it more amenable to coating with sauces/seasonings. ?If find the cut shapes (rotini, penne, etc) work best for lunches, easier and neater for little ones to eat than long noodles like spaghetti.

Veggies: ?If you kiddo is really picky about veggies, try grating them fine ? very fine? or mincing in a mini-food processor until almost a pulp, and mixing INTO dips, spreads, nut butters, tofu or chickpea sandwich mashes, or into those grain bowls, pasta dishes, wraps, and more. Yeah, they might notice them ? but they will be too tiny to pick out, and if they like the overall flavor of the dish, they will eat it. ?And, if added to a pasta with other items they love (dried fruit, tamari roasted chickpeas, tofu cubes), they will more likely accept!

"momelet" by dreena burtonBreakfast Foods: Some children love to have some breakfast foods like pancakes, french toast, tofu scrambles, or ?momelets? in their lunchboxes. ?If you prepare a batch or two on the weekend, it can carry you over two or more lunches during the week. ?Momelet?photo by Ricki Heller ? Diet, Dessert and Dogs.

Savory sandwiches. If you have leftover grilled or baked tofu, pulse it through a mini-food processor and then mix in chopped veggies and condiments and use as a sandwich filling. Or simply use slices in sandwiches, with a tahini spread, hummus, or other condiment to hold the tofu in place. Chickpeas can be mashed or pureed and again mixed with veggies and condiments for a hearty sandwich filling, and one that looks not much different from the egg or tuna sandwiches other kids might be eating. Grilled cheese sandwiches are a favorite, and you can use any vegan cheese you prefer, or a nut or seed cheese in place of a commercial vegan cheese. Let cool before packing, and include a small container of ketchup for dipping. If your child is a true veggie lover, make simple sandwiches with chopped, sliced, or grated fresh veggies. ?Use whole grain/sprouted breads, or whole-grain pitas or bagels.

Fruit: Fresh fruit is an obvious choice, especially easy-to-eat fruit such as grapes, strawberries, and orange segments. But others such as cubed melon, plums, kiwi wedges (the kids can eat them like an orange), and half a mango (scored) are welcome changes. Also try replacing raisins with other dried fruit such as apple slices, mango, or apricots. Choose unsulfured and organic whenever possible.

Baked Goods: I am always doing double batches of some variety of muffin, mini-muffin, healthy cookie, snack bar, etc. ?I give many examples at the end of this post of recipes from my books. Coconut Banana Muffins (becoming very popular! See photo at top of post) from Let Them Eat Vegan.

Store-bought items. Lunches and snacks are made even easier with a few prepared items: healthier granola bars, dairy-free yogurts, whole organic fruit bars, unsweetened applesauce cups, crackers, and other more natural snacks. ?And, while foods like Daiya cheese, cheese spreads, and veggie dogs are more processed, there is nothing wrong with incorporating them occasionally, especially on those joyous ?hot lunch? days! I particularly like the Wayfare brand of cheese spread. ?It is oat-based, the ingredients are not from some science experiment, and it works really well for a sandwich/wrap spread to ?hold? other ingredients when you are plum out of hummus! ?(hmmm, plum hummus? plummus?) ?I?ll stop.

Nibbly Bites: ?Kids love finger foods, so things like beans (for our kids, that means Tamari Roasted Chickpeas, Cinnamon Tortilla Strips, Softly Spiced Nuts (if nuts permitted, or you could sub seeds and dried fruit in this recipe), small bites of tofu, tempeh strips?(I simply bake these in the toaster oven on a parchment-lined tray until lightly browned), or seitan, sheets of nori, seaweed snacks, raw crackers, or whole-grain/raw cereals.?Kaia has a line of raw snacks, and some may be just right for your lunchboxes, like ?salt and vinegar pumpkin seeds?!

CNC milling machines sever for industry construction | Business

Business | Business | * Written by nicole zhang | Sunday, 26 August 2012 21:32 | Word Count: 442

CNC milling machines sever for industry construction In the old days of machining, many round components needed to be machined in a lathe, and then a milling machine. This meant that these components needed to be handled two or more times, costing more in efficiency and labor. It also affected the precision by adding another possibility of location errors of features on the component. In the past 20 years, technology has dramatically advanced with turn mill machining.
CNC milling machines usually use tools that have been standardized to an extent. While European manufacturers prefer SK tooling, those in the US prefer to use CAT tooling. The newer US versions include BT tooling, which due to its symmetrical design is supposed to be more stable at higher speeds. The hollow design of SK tooling gives it better gripping attributes and its stability at high speeds makes it the preferred choice for many users. While there is a lot of standardization in CNC milling machines, manual machines have little or no standard tools.
Points to ponder while buying these Machines
The first point is to identify the processes required to manufacture the required component and the machine that would be suitable for those needs. CNC milling machines that offer flexibility in operations should be preferred in case your needs change in the future. The machine should also have a tough transparent cover that can stop material from flying outwards and injuring the operator. Machines that have an override switch to stop all operations immediately should also be preferred in case of any problem. If a person is looking out for used CNC milling machine then he or she should definitely check for cracks, especially in parts of the machine that are made by casting. Each and every part including the cutter, spindle, and motors should be thoroughly checked and tested before making any purchase. Some refurbishes also come with a guarantee from the seller and this could certainly increase confidence levels of the buyer.
CNC turning centers and CNC milling centers where separately developed with this technology and improved though the years. Now the two have partially merged into "turn mill" centers.
These machine tools can accurately machine predominantly round components, and then add many different features such as milled shapes, cross hole work, and even 3-d mill work in some cases. It offers very efficient all in one machining with no handling. This precision machining method tremendously increases efficiency and accuracy of precision components saving cost of manufacturing all around.

Gas prices edge higher as Isaac bears down

TODAY's Al Roker and Matt Lauer report from Key West, Fla., which is being hit by heavy winds and rain. Other parts of the state are experiencing similar conditions, including the site of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

By Martha C. White, NBC News contributor

Updated 4:15 p.m. EDT: Tropical Storm Isaac is likely to have only a slight impact on gas prices initially as Gulf of Mexico oil rigs are evacuated as a precautionary measure ahead of the storm. But pump prices could surge sharply if the storm triggers flooding or power outages that shut down oil refineries after it makes landfall this week.

Oil companies with Gulf platforms,?including BP, Shell and Chevron,?said Sunday they would evacuate in the face of the threat from Isaac. Offshore oil production in the Gulf accounts for about 23 percent of U.S. crude production, and refining activity along the Gulf coast accounts for about 45 percent of the nation's refining,?according to?Matthew Lewis, economics professor at Ohio State University.

Gas prices jumped about 2.5 percent on futures markets Monday, although crude oil prices fell.

"Theoretically, you?ll get a small increase in crude prices [that] doesn?t amount to more than a few pennies at the pump," said Kevin Book, an analyst at?ClearView Energy Partners LLC.

Related: Mandatory evacuations outside New Orleans as Isaac nears

"The bigger concern is going to be the wrath of the hurricane once it comes on shore," said?Barbara Shook, senior reporter-at-large for Oil Market Intelligence.

Isaac was still a tropical storm at midday Monday, but forecasters predicted it could pick up strength from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and build into a Category 1 hurricane, capable of sustained winds from?74 to 95 mph. Residents in flood-prone, low-lying areas around New Orleans were being told to evacuate, and a hurricane warning was issued for a 300-mile stretch of?the Gulf Coast in four states from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

Federal authorities reported that 58 percent of oil platforms and 54 percent of oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico had been evacuated, halting about 78 percent of Gulf oil production.

The storm was expected to make landfall by late Tuesday, almost seven years to the day that Hurricane Katrina slammed New Orleans,?killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage along the coast. It was followed less than a month later by Hurricane Rita.?A hurricane hasn't hit the Gulf Coast since Ike in 2008. ?

"The major problem following Katrina and?Rita was damage to the refineries," Shook said. Storms that pass through don't do as much damage, but "if they stay in one place and just blow and rain, that's what causes the damage."

The Energy Information Administration said those devastating 2005 hurricanes were responsible for an increase of 80 cents per gallon in?the price of?wholesale gasoline.?

"You have more to fear at the pump from the water on the ground than from the wind through the rigs," said Book, the ClearView analyst. Onshore damage to the energy infrastructure is almost always a function of flooding, although prolonged power outages are also a threat to distribution, since pipeline pumps are powered by electricity.

"Storm surge and heavy rainfall are other hazards that have the potential to impact the landfall area,"?Risk Management Solutions said in a new report, warning of the potential for a six- to 12-foot storm surge in southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi.

If either refining or distribution in the Gulf is sidelined for days or weeks, drivers could see gas prices go up 10 to 25 cents a gallon, Book said. The national average gas price is currently $3.73 a gallon, up more than 7 percent over the past month.

Some gasoline retailers in the Southeast are taking advantage of the fear factor already. CBS 4 Miami reported one local gas station charging roughly 60 cents a gallon more for gasoline than others in the area. Price-gouging laws, which make it illegal for businesses to hike prices on necessities like gas, water and hotel rooms, have gone into effect in Florida and Louisiana.

A hurricane warning is issued for the northern Gulf coast, from Louisiana to Florida. Oil dips, however, as there doesn't seem to be much fear the storm will damage infrastructure.

Isaac's wide "cone of uncertainty" that stretches all the way from the borders of Texas to Alabama make predicting the storm's impact challenging. This uncertainty drove up oil futures, although prices fell back down on Monday due to speculation that the government will intervene by releasing crude from the?Strategic Petroleum Reserve release, according to reports from Reuters and Dow Jones.

Could Paul Ryan's small business ties aid the GOP? | The Salt Lake ...

(FILE | The Associated Press) In this Monday, June 18, 2012, file photo, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., looks on during a campaign event with Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at Monterey Mills in Janesville, Wis. When small business owners vote in the presidential election in November, one factor in their choice may be Paul Ryan?s ties to a small company, the construction firm in Janesville, whose roots go back to the business his great-grandfather started in 1884.

New York ?

On his way to becoming a congressman from his hometown of Janesville, Wis., Paul Ryan worked in a small business ? a construction company with roots that reach back to the firm that his great-grandfather started in 1884.

Although the future GOP vice presidential candidate worked at Ryan Inc. Central doing marketing for just a short time ? from 1997-98 ? that experience may help the Romney-Ryan ticket. The obstacles that small businesses face hiring more workers are among the biggest issues in this presidential election. The perception that Ryan understands their problems could bring in votes ? even though he was chosen largely because of his conservative stance on federal spending.

"I always appreciate folks who have spent time in the real world," says Nick Balletta, CEO of TalkPoint, a New York firm that runs online broadcasts for businesses. "In the real world, there?s payroll that needs to be made, bills that need to be paid and customers that need to be satisfied."

The GOP might convince business owners that despite the brevity of Ryan?s time at the company that "it was a valid experience and he would be more likely to understand their situation," says Trey Grayson, director of Harvard University?s Institute of Politics. He also may appeal to independent voters including small business owners in parts of states like Wisconsin, Florida, Nevada, Illinois and Michigan that have struggled more than other areas of the country, says David McCuan, a political science professor at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif.

"Ryan helps at some level in certain states," he says. "It?s an open question of whether he helps in the big picture."

Both Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden have spent almost all their working lives in politics. Biden was elected to the New Castle, Del., County Council shortly before he turned 27 and to the Senate when he was nearly 30. Ryan was 28 when he was elected to Congress. Biden?s resume doesn?t include time at a small business, but he talks about the financial struggles of his father, who lost money in business ventures, had to move in with Biden?s grandfather and had jobs that included cleaning boilers and managing a car dealership. That has helped voters identify with his middle-class childhood, McCuan says.

"Biden does a really good job of connecting with the common working person" and that appeals to small business owners, he says.

Ryan has that quality as well, and "brings that everyman kind of pitch" to the GOP ticket, McCuan says. That can mitigate the feeling among voters that Romney can?t connect with people, he says. But, he adds, both candidates look like a regular guy, someone you?d want to have a beer with.

Biden?s experience as vice president is more relevant than his resume.? "No matter what the background of Joe Biden was before, that trumps everything else," Grayson says. ?

story continues below

Nonetheless, Ryan?s small business ties will likely come up during the campaign.

Ryan Inc.?s operations include excavation and building site preparation for commercial and residential construction. It also builds golf courses and creates wetlands. Although it?s based in Janesville, much of its work is done elsewhere ? it has offices in Elgin, Ill., and Hagerstown, Md., and has worked on projects across the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast.

"What we do is move piles of dirt from one place to another" using equipment like bulldozers, says Adam Ryan, company president and Paul Ryan?s cousin. Their grandfathers were brothers.

The company has between 100 and 125 full-time employees at its three locations and during the construction season, that number rises to between 300 and 500 workers, Adam Ryan says. Ryan Inc. is small enough that it doesn?t make the list of the 40 biggest employers in Rock County, where Janesville is located. But the business is highly regarded in the city of nearly 64,000 because of the connection to the Ryan family, says Vic Grassman, Janesville?s director of economic development.

The cousins went to high school together but didn?t work together at Ryan Inc. Adam joined the firm after Paul was elected to Congress. Paul Ryan, who earned less than $30,000 at Ryan Inc., helped the company "figure out what kind of work we should be pursuing," Adam says.

"My recollection is that it did lead to projects for us," Adam says. Neither he nor the Romney campaign could provide specifics. Paul Ryan doesn?t have an ownership stake in the company, according to his cousin and the campaign.

Like other Republican lawmakers, Paul Ryan has called for the repeal of the health care law that the Supreme Court upheld in June. He?s critical of government spending and regulations created under the Obama administration. Although Ryan and Romney have campaigned on issues like health care and regulations that affect small companies, Adam Ryan says his biggest concern as a small business owner is getting more sales in a construction environment that remains weak following the recession.

Bath sports fans go for gold to help raise cash for charity | This is Bath

On the back of the nation's growing enthusiasm to get active after the London 2012 Olympics, sport in Bath has been helping to raise money for charity.

Bath and North East Somerset Council helped to arrange the Gold Challenge Games as part of the Olympic legacy programme.

The event saw teams competing in activities such as archery, badminton and a tug-of-war at the Recreation Ground and Bath Sports and Leisure Centre.

"The feel good factor around the Olympics has been fantastic," said Martin Pellow, project officer for the B&NES sport and active lifestyle team.

"It has inspired a lot of people to try something new, and we're here as a team to try to encourage and facilitate that.

"There is a fantastic landscape of activities going on in the area. We're very lucky to have some great facilities and clubs."

Wendy O'Donnell, 42, a member of the West of England Sports Trust team taking part in the challenge, said: "It's brilliant. You get to meet new people from similar backgrounds, and behind it all we're raising money for charity."

Some lesser-known sports were also featured on the day, including the Paralympic sport goalball.

Players are blindfolded, and have to try to stop the other team from scoring goals by using a bell in the ball to determine its location.

"It's a way of making it more accessible to people.

"I probably wouldn't have tried this, but it was fun to give it a go," said Craig Hopkins, 27, one of the competitors.

"It's good that everyone can take part and get experience of sports that they probably wouldn't otherwise play."

All proceeds made from entry fees were donated to the British Heart Foundation, the National Osteoporosis Society and Dorothy House.

The Gold Challenge is an Olympic programme to encourage people to raise money for charity through sport during 2012.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla . In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly ten weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Governor Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the gridlocked politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Governor Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."
