Pope Francis seeks to stir up Roman Catholic energy on Brazilian sands

The white sands of Copacabana beach typically draw millions of sun-worshippers, New Year?s Eve revelers and fans for free concerts by the likes of Stevie Wonder and the Rolling Stones. In the coming week, the star of the show is infinitely less flamboyant than Mick Jagger, but he promises to stir up just as much passion among devotees.

Pope Francis, the 76-year-old Argentine who became the church?s first pontiff from the Americas in March, will turn the crescent-shaped shoreline into a giant stage for his first international trip as pope, returning to the embrace of Latin America to preside over the Roman Catholic Church?s World Youth Day festival.

The pontiff is coming to the heart of a city known for pricey real estate and sexy samba with a message of humility, simplicity and support for the poor ? priorities that he has set out already in his four months as pope.

The Catholic Church in Brazil is one he knows well, aware that it is losing legions of adherents to Pentecostal churches and secularism. But Catholic youth festivals are meant to reinvigorate the faithful, and Francis, a soccer-loving native son, is expected to rally young people with his humble and unconventional ways.

More than a million young Catholics are expected to flock to Rio to celebrate their new pope. The city overseen by the giant Christ the Redeemer statue has mobilized thousands of soldiers and police to make sure the visit goes smoothly, even as violent anti-government protests continue to erupt a month after Brazil saw mass demonstrations nationwide.

Some residents have already prepared a uniquely Rio de Janeiro welcome for Francis: They?ve built from sand life-sized images of the pope on Copacabana, in place of the usual sculptures of bikini-clad beauties.

Rafaela Bastos, a pilgrim walking along the beach a few days before the pontiff?s arrival, said the ?Francis effect? was already evident. As she spoke, an army of construction workers toiled at a furious clip on the beach to finish the enormous, white altar where Pope Francis will celebrate a Mass.

?Francis has captivated me; he?s absolutely won me over,? said the 23-year-old from Brazil?s Minas Gerais state. ?He?s brought the church close to the people and especially to young Catholics. He?s creative, he?s modern, he?s not changing doctrine, but he seems far more flexible and open to discussion.?

That Francis is from Latin America ?just makes him even better: He understands our culture and that brings him closer to us and allows us to understand him,? Bastos said.

Despite such optimism, these are worrying times for the church, and Brazil?s case is emblematic.

The vast nation was 89 per cent Catholic when Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit in 1980. According to the national census, that figure had dropped to 65 per cent by 2010. Such declines are happening all over Latin America, which is one of the church?s remaining strongholds amid growing secularism in Europe and the United States. Sex abuse and corruption scandals have further eroded trust in the church.

Francis?s response to the challenges has been to help find ?an entirely new way to interact with the world? by the manner in which he communicates, said Sao Paulo Cardinal Odilo Scherer, one of two Latin Americans named to the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization created in 2010.

?The church, Christianity, the Catholic faith cannot be apart from the world,? Scherer said. ?It must be a part of the world, inside of it, and it must interact with modern society if it hopes to have repercussions and influence.?

Francis has moved quickly to build a more everyman approach to his office.

He still refuses to sign his name as pope, rarely refers to himself as pontiff, and thinks of his role more as a good pastor ? and a good role model for other pastors. Once a priest who rode the subway to work, he is now a pope who spurns the ornate symbols of power: He passed on the red papal shoes for his old black ones and shed the fancy papal residence and gold pectoral cross.

Recently, Francis skipped a concert held in his honour in the Vatican auditorium, something unheard of among popes. Instead, he left his white papal chair empty as the concert went on without him.

DNA finally nails the notorious Boston Strangler

Between 1962 and 1964, the Boston Strangler claimed the lives of at least 11 women. Now, half a century later, DNA evidence has confirmed that the chief suspect, Albert DeSalvo, raped and murdered one of those victims, 19-year-old Mary Sullivan.

DeSalvo confessed to killing Sullivan and about a dozen other women, but later recanted that confession and was never convicted. He was killed in prison in 1973 while serving time for other crimes.

In a bid to solve the mystery, the Boston Police Crime Lab dug up DeSalvo's corpse and removed three teeth and a section of bone from his left arm. The DNA matched degraded samples of DNA that were from the crime scene, which were analysed using sensitive techniques that have only become available in recent years.

Late in 2012, male DNA was extracted from Mary Sullivan's remains and the blanket on which her body was found by two forensics labs ? Bode Technology in Lorton, Virginia, and Orchid Cellmark in Dallas, Texas. Both agencies use advanced techniques to derive profiles from degraded DNA.

While both labs found the same profile, investigators found no match for it in the FBI's CODIS database of previous offender's DNA profiles.

Lucky break

The next task was to obtain DNA from DeSalvo, which meant exhuming his body. "To get an exhumation they needed probable cause," says Bruce Budowle at the University of North Texas in Denton, formerly the FBI's leading specialist on forensic DNA profiling.

That legal requirement was met after matching the unknown DNA profile with that of DeSalvo's fraternal nephew, using a water bottle that he had drunk out of, scavenged by the Boston Police. Based on genetic markers on the Y chromosome, which is passed intact down the male line, investigators were able to implicate DeSalvo and exclude 99.9 per cent of the male population. The implication is that the DeSalvo males' must have a rare Y chromosome type ? a lucky break for investigators.

When DeSalvo's DNA was tested by Orchid Cellmark, it matched the crime-scene DNA. In a press conference in Boston on Friday, the director of the Boston Police Crime Lab, Donald Haynes, explained the level of confidence in the match: "You'd have to search four planet Earths to find one person with that profile, and Albert DeSalvo had that profile."

Use These SEO Tips And Ensure Your Site's Success | Internet ...

Getting more traffic coming to your website is key if you wish to generate online income. SEO is essential if you wish to increase the visibility of your site. Read on to learn methods for properly utilizing search engine optimization in your business.

Search engine optimization relies strongly on key words for its success. Avoid this by keeping keywords under 20% of your page total.

Investigate PPC compensation plans for your affiliate marketing program. This service is the most common, and the pay is fairly low, but it can build up quickly.

Coding is an important aspect to consider when you are using SEO. Say you use primarily JavaScript for the content on your site, but you have messy code ? indexing it will be difficult for search engine spiders. In addition, you won?t be indexed if you have Flash included without a description written out.

Help search engines find you easily and you will rise in the ranks. Spiders analyze your site, looking at things like keywords. However, they don?t always grasp how to navigate around your site. If you create a web site map that shows each of your site?s pages along with a link, the web crawler can follow the links to gain an understanding of your site?s layout and page hierarchy.

Your domain name should be both relevant to the product you?re selling and easy to remember. A memorable name is important, especially for people who find your content through social media sites.

Increase your PageRank by attracting new visitors and establishing rapport with them. You want them to remain on your site as long as possible. Research suggests that the length of time an individual stays on a website influences that site?s PageRank. This information comes from metrics such as Quantcast scores. You can use discussion groups and forums to convince visitors to stay logged in to your site for a longer time.

Try several different keywords when you are trying to rank higher in search engines. These meta tags are one of the main spots that the search engine bots use to determine what your site is about. To demonstrate this, let?s say your site theme is about knives. You could include a variety of related keywords, including: ?knives,? ?nives?, and ?knifes?, along with any other reasonable options you may want to consider.

Search Engines

Interesting meta tags on each web page can help improve your search engine results. A well-written description tag will benefit your site, as it is included on many search engines to tell readers what your site is about, enticing them to click through. Make your meta tag information concise and meaningful. By doing this you will bring in a large audience, and you may even get more visitors than websites ranked higher than you on search engines.

You can get a little more SEO performance by taking your website into the blogging world. Start a blog of your own, and get involved with other blogs that cover related topics. Blogs are a good way to get a high ranking. Search engine robots love blogs because they are constantly updated with new content. Having a good number of backlinks can improve your search engine visibility.

SEO writing style needs to be applied to your writing techniques, if you want to start ranking higher with search engines. Simply put, repeat your keywords as many times as you can and still make the content flow. As search engines work partly by locating keywords and evaluating their density, this should improve your search engine rankings.

A lot of people think that using keywords in HTML comments is useful for SEO. You should focus on delivering quality, relevant content instead.

An often forgotten, but extremely important, task necessary in any exceptional website is proofreading. Take the time to see that visitors and the search engines can comprehend the information on your site. The chances that a search engine will direct traffic to your site greatly decreases if your site contains many spelling or grammar issues.

Alt Tags

Make it easier for the web spiders and your rank will increase. Web spiders will find your content based on keywords, but your site should be easy for them to use. A site map is a great feature to help spiders determine which pages are the most important.

Websites that are using image links will be well served by including an ?alt? tag for their links to improve their rankings. These tags take the place of images if the image cannot be displayed. The point here is that the search engines pay attention to alt tags, so if you have keywords sprinkled into your alt tags, search engines will take them into account.

In order to manifest an increase in search engine results, make sure your keywords are best placed in their longest and plural forms. Some search engines use what is known as keyword stemming. If your primary keyword were ?parent?, a stemming search engine would not link you to the results for searches based around ?parents? or ?parenting?. Use the longer form of words, such as adding -ing or -ly, to take advantage of keyword stemming.

Joining organizations like the BBB and your city?s Chamber of Commerce can improve your site?s search engine rankings. You will then obtain a direct link from their site to yours, which will also help your business with local searches. Also, if your business has a good Better Business Bureau rating, you will also get the added benefit of consumers trusting your website even more.

Create a text file and name it ?robots?, then file it in your root directory. txt file that gets added into your own root directory. This tells the search engines that these files are not to be accessed.

To improve SEO, use specific keywords throughout the entire article. When you put keywords in that are relevant to your content, you can ensure that a search engine will ferret them out. Ultimately, this allows readers to find the articles more easily. You should try to include a keyword in your titles, summaries and have it sprinkled 4 to 5 in the body of your article.

If you hire a search engine optimization company to improve your site, be sure to ask the important questions before you agree to anything. For example, ask if they have any experience in your line of business, what SEO strategies they regard as indispensable, the length of time it takes for these strategies to produce results and how much their services are going to cost you. Ask them to provide you with examples of their work. Seek out their former clients whenever possible. A reliable company will be more than happy to comply.

When search results are shown, it?s probably the results showing on the first two pages that will see the highest traffic. If you wish to attract more people to your blog or website, remember the tips laid out here. If you use search engine optimization tools properly, you will successfully get your websites listed in Google and gain customers.

Promote your expertise in your particular field, so your customers are aware of your level of knowledge. It?s a very powerful marketing technique. Design your website around a certain niche, and apply search engine optimization to get visitors who belong to that niche. Keep your customers needs in mind and meet them; don?t make assumptions about what they want.

NFL suspends Giants' Will Hill four games for substance abuse

Giants backup safety Will Hill has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's substance- abuse policy. The suspension was confirmed Saturday by a team official.

It is Hill's second suspension in the last two seasons. He was suspended four games last year for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs for using the banned drug Adderall which contains a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.

Hill, a second-year safety who joined the Giants in 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida, can participate in training camp and preseason games. His suspension will begin with the regular-season opener against Dallas and will end Sept. 30.

Hill was suspended four games last October for his PED violation.

In 12 games last season, Hill had 27 tackles, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

(AP) ? Once the very symbol of American industrial might, Detroit became the biggest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy Thursday, its finances ravaged and its neighborhoods hollowed out by a long, slow decline in population and auto manufacturing.

The filing, which had been feared for months, put the city on an uncertain course that could mean laying off municipal employees, selling off assets, raising fees and scaling back basic services such as trash collection and snow plowing, which have already been slashed.

"Only one feasible path offers a way out," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a letter approving the move.

The filing marked a turning point for city and state leaders, who must now confront the challenge of rebuilding Detroit's broken budget in as little as a year.

Kevyn Orr, a bankruptcy expert hired by the state in March to stop the city's fiscal free-fall, said Detroit would continue paying its bills and employees.

But, said Michael Sweet, a bankruptcy attorney in Fox-Rothschild's San Francisco office, "they don't have to pay anyone they don't want to. And no one can sue them."

The city's woes have piled up for generations. In the 1950s, its population grew to 1.8 million people, many of whom were lured by plentiful, well-paying auto jobs. Later that decade, Detroit began to decline as developers starting building suburbs that lured away workers and businesses.

Then beginning in the late 1960s, auto companies began opening plants in other cities. Property values and tax revenue fell, and police couldn't control crime. In later years, the rise of autos imported from Japan started to cut the size of the U.S. auto industry.

By the time the auto industry melted down in 2009, only a few factories from GM and Chrysler were left. GM is the only one with headquarters in Detroit, though it has huge research and testing centers with thousands of jobs outside the city.

Detroit lost a quarter-million residents between 2000 and 2010. Today, the population struggles to stay above 700,000.

The result is a metropolis where whole neighborhoods are practically deserted and basic services cut off in places. Looming over the crumbling landscape is a budget deficit believed to be more than $380 million and long-term debt that could be as much as $20 billion.

In recent months, the city has relied on state-backed bond money to meet payroll for its 10,000 employees.

"It's an embarrassment, number one, to come to the realization that we're actually in this situation," said Kevin Frederick, an admissions representative for a local career training school. "Not that we didn't see it coming. I guess we have to take a couple of steps backward to move forward."

Orr made the filing in federal bankruptcy court under Chapter 9, the bankruptcy system for cities and counties.

He was unable to persuade a host of creditors, unions and pension boards to take pennies on the dollar to help with the city's massive financial restructuring. If the bankruptcy filing is approved, city assets could be liquidated to satisfy demands for payment.

Orr said Thursday that he "bent over backward" to work with creditors, rejecting criticism that he was too rigid. "Anybody who takes that position just hasn't been listening."

The bankruptcy could last through summer or fall 2014, which coincides with the end of Orr's 18-month appointment, he said.

Snyder determined earlier this year that Detroit was in a financial emergency and without a plan for improvement. He made it the largest U.S. city to fall under state oversight when a state loan board hired Orr. His letter was attached to Orr's bankruptcy filing.

Creditors and public servants "deserve to know what promises the city can and will keep," Snyder wrote. "The only way to do those things is to radically restructure the city and allow it to reinvent itself without the burden of impossible obligations."

A turnaround specialist, Orr represented automaker Chrysler LLC during its successful restructuring. He issued a warning early on in his tenure in Detroit that bankruptcy was a road he preferred to avoid.

Some city workers and retirement systems filed lawsuits to prevent Snyder from approving Orr's bankruptcy request, said Detroit-area turnaround specialist James McTevia.

They have argued that bankruptcy could change pension and retiree benefits, which are guaranteed under state law.

Others are concerned that a bankrupt Detroit will cause businesses large and small to reconsider their operations in the city. But General Motors does not anticipate any impact to its daily operations, the automaker said Thursday in a statement.

Detroit has more than double the population of the Northern California community of Stockton, Calif., which until Detroit had been the largest U.S. city ever to file for bankruptcy when it did so in June 2012.

Before Detroit, the largest municipal bankruptcy filing had involved Jefferson County, Ala., which was more than $4 billion in debt when it filed in 2011. Another recent city to have filed for bankruptcy was San Bernardino, Calif., which took that route in August 2012 after learning it had a $46 million deficit.

Nelson Mandela Day: Former President of South Africa Turns 95

Nelson Mandela turns 95 years old Thursday, a milestone that's being met with gleeful celebrations throughout South Africa and around the world.

The scene outside the hospital where Mandela is being treated has been joyous, as children with balloons and flowers in front of giant get well cards.

Nelson Mandela's birthday, July 18, has become a global holiday, known as International Mandela Day, to honor the former president's legacy.

The anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner encourages people to volunteer, do community service and offer acts of kindness, great and small.

Mandela Day events were in full swing all across South Africa Thursday, with adults and children chipping in on beautification projects and feeding the hungry.

Participants are asked to start with 67 minutes of their time of volunteering to honor Mandela's 67 years of service to his nation and the world.

Morgan Freeman, who portrayed Mandela in 2009's Invictus, said, "We encourage everyone around the world to pledge 67 minutes. Join us to honor this great man."

One of great social and humanitarian figures of the 20th century, he has been critically ill in recent weeks but is said to have been improving in recent days.

Happy birthday to a man who is truly peerless!

Track, analyze, and budget your personal finances with Dollarbird for iPhone

Track, analyze, and budget your personal finances with Dollarbird for iPhone

Dollarbird is a new finance app that aims to make it easier for you to manage and analyze your personal finances. The unique thing about Dollarbird is that it functions much like a calendar which means adding an income or expense is done just as easily as adding an event to a calendar.

If you aren't a fan of services such as Mint or PageOnce, Dollarbird may be a nice alternative. It requires very little personal information to use which some users tend to prefer.

I've become a fan of the way Dollarbird analyzes finances and provides you many different ways to view data. Tables, lists, and charts are a few of the ways you can get an overview of your finances. The calendar view then shows notations as to where you've added income and spent income. This makes it easy to find what you're looking for instead of scrolling through long lists of entries.

The interface is very well done and income and expense entry is quick and easy. If you happen to check out Dollarbird, let us know what you think in the comments.

'Aggressive,' 'devastating' fire burning thousands of acres in Southern California

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

A "very aggressive" fire in Southern California's San Jacinto Mountains grew to 9,000 acres Tuesday, destroying a least six homes, spreading heavy smoke into the Coachella Valley and forcing the evacuation of the Camp Ronald McDonald campsite for children with cancer, officials said.

"There's a disaster area in there. It's devastating," Scott Visyak, a spokesman for the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told NBC Los Angeles?on Tuesday.

"There's several homes lost. There's several homes standing. The fire had just gone through there very aggressively," Visyak said.

The so-called Mountain Fire, which ignited at 1:43 p.m. (4:43 p.m. ET) Monday, was burning Tuesday evening near Idyllwild Pine Cove, according to the joint state and federal incident report.?Visyak said it was headed over Palm Canyon and into Andreas Canyon.

More than 1,500 extra firefighters poured into the region Tuesday after the fire nearly doubled in size, from 4,700 acres to 9,000 acres. At 8 p.m. (11 p.m. ET), about 2,250 firefighters from at least 16 local, state and federal agencies?were battling the blaze, which was only 10 percent contained and was projected to have "extreme" potential for further growth.

It was reclassified as a Type 1 incident management response ? the biggest there is. Fifteen helicopters and 10 air tankers were deployed Tuesday night.

Bob Poole, a spokesman for the National Forest Service, told NBC News that there was?no immediate direct threat to significantly populated areas, but a mandatory evacuation order for Camp Ronald McDonald, a charitable facility for children with cancer, was issued early Tuesday evening, according to the official incident report.

Sarah Orth, the camp's executive director, said in a message to parents that campers and volunteers were told at dinner to pack up their belongings and were taken to Hemet High School, one of two regional evacuation centers.

Camp staffers were calling and messaging parents to provide pick-up information, she said.

Evacuations were also in effect for about 50 homes in the area, as well as the Living Free Animal Sanctuary and the Zen Mountain Center.?

Poole said six homes had been?destroyed in the Bonita Vista area, three of them mobile homes. Unspecified commercial property and a handful of other structures had been destroyed in the Pine Springs area, he said.?

The flames are spreading through timber and chaparral, or shrubland, ?that are highly flammable because of the dry winter, officials said. Ninety-plus-degree daytime temperatures, humidity in the single digits and shifting winds have also presented fire crews with a challenging task.

"With the heavy fuels we've got and the temperatures we're experiencing, it's making it a very aggressive, hot fire right now," Visyak said.

After Deep-Sixing Queens Borough President Bid, What's Next For Leroy Comrie?

ICYMI: Just a month after rebooting his bid for Queens Borough President, Democratic City Councilman Leroy Comrie has dropped out of the race, citing personal reasons.

comrie subway delmundo.jpgOur Lisa L. Colangelo reports:

Even though Comrie was a popular figure in Queens politics, his campaign was hobbled by anemic fundraising.

?After careful consideration, my family and I believe, due to personal matters, this is the best course of action,? Comrie said in a statement released over the weekend.

Comrie has yet to file his latest fundraising figures with the New York City Campaign Finance Board.

But as of May, he had raised just $145,000 and spent about $105,000 -- far less than some of his rivals.

The once-crowded Democratic Primary for the spot has thinned out in recent months.

City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., former City Councilwoman Melinda Katz and State Sen. Tony Avella remain in the contest.

State Sen. Jose Peralta and Deputy Borough President Barry Grondenchik also ended their bids after the Queens Democratic Party tapped Katz as their candidate of choice.

Republican Tony Arcabascio is also running for the seat. Queens Borough President Helen Marshall will be stepping down at the end of the year because of term limits.

Comrie?s failure-to-catch-fire candidacy came as a surprise to many political insiders. He wields considerable power as the chair of the Council?s Land Use Committee and heads its Queens delegation.

?Queens is one of the greatest boroughs in our city, and I am thankful to everyone for the opportunity to showcase my platform for inclusion and empowerment and express my passion for the borough that was afforded me in this race,? Comrie said.

?I am looking forward to serving the people of Queens -- in one capacity or another -- for a long time to come.?

BRAWL NEW LOGO.jpgComrie has often been discussed as a possible Deputy Borough President.

His campaign decline to comment on future plans or who Comrie will endorse in the coming days.

Vallone has raised over $1 million and spent about $498,759, according to his most recent filings. Katz has yet to file her July numbers. As of May, she had raised 485,735 and spent $168,418. Avella has raised $70,773 and spent about $19,000.

Candidates are entitled to additional matching funds through the city?s public financing system.

HBT: News and notes from NL player availability

We?re in the middle of the NL player availabilities right now. The AL players will be made available in a few minutes. Somewhere right now there is a press conference about the Home Run Derby about to start. I?m not going to it because no one will be honest and say ?Well, I?m just gonna try to hit the ball really far and see what happens.? Who needs it?

These events are really for the folks who live on player quotes. We, obviously, don?t live on player quotes here at HBT. Unless they?re funny or controversial, of course. Then we go to town. But hearing and repeating that it?s an honor to be selected to the All-Star game and that they?re soaking it all in and they?d like to thank the fans who voted for them, well, that doesn?t do a ton for us. And I?ve never been the fan of ?ask the ballplayer the off-the-wall question!? school of journalism. Let?s leave that to gimmicky NFL people on the Super Bowl media day. Baseball and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog don?t mix that well.

Still, I went down and talked to some NL players and will talk to some AL players later because, heck, maybe someone would say something funny or controversial.?No one did to me (we?ll have to wait for stories from other reporters before we know for sure). I talked to Craig Kimbrel, Freddie Freeman and Andrew McCutchen. I was in a giant scrum around David Wright. I listened in on about a dozen other players being interviewed by other reporters. Among the highlights:

  • Jim Leyland had said earlier that, no surprise, Mariano Rivera will close the game out if necessary for the AL. I asked Kimbrel if Bruce Bochy had given any indication of the closer pecking order for the NL. I told him that he can answer quietly so Jason Grilli, sitting nearby, wouldn?t hear. Kimbrel said that he had no idea as he landed in New York about ten minutes ago and that I was like the fourth person he saw. When asked (by someone else) what his favorite park to pitch in was, he said ?the big ones.?
  • Freeman is disappointed by the fact that a day or two after he won the Final Vote thing he got hurt and now isn?t able to play. I almost think winning the vote for him was the most fun part about it, though. He figured he?d get killed by Puig in the voting and thinks his family back in Orange County stuffed the ballot box like crazy. I told him 19 million people voted for him. He laughed and said ?well, they helped.?
  • Jason Grilli is honored to be here. He also is unaware of any closer pecking order for the NL. Nor does he know if he?s the pitcher that Bruce Bochy has chosen to hold out of the game in case it goes 16 innings or something. I said that that?d probably be a starter. He said ?yeah.?
  • Unsurprisingly, Andrew McCutchen does not think the Pirates are going to collapse this year. I asked him if that question bugs him. He added that it?s way better to be asked about a team collapsing than never having the team be good enough to inspire that question in the first place. He didn?t put it quite like that ? he sort of got to that point after many words ? but that was the idea. I feel like it was one of those things that, back in the day before tape recorders and media scrums, one single sports writer ? a Damon Runyon type ? would craft it into a more pointed and witty quote and attribute it to McCutchen all the same.

Sometimes I?m kinda sad we don?t live in those days, actually. I like to think of ballplayers as witty raconteur-types. But they aren?t. They?re ballplayers and they?re paid to crush baseballs, not say witty things to sweaty reporters. And therein lies my basic issue with the game of player quotes.

T.J. Grant is not having your conspiracy theories after bowing out of Benson Henderson bout

Anthony Pettis got what he wanted. He wanted a title fight with Benson Henderson in Milwaukee at UFC 164. Thanks to T.J. Grant's concussion, he is fighting Henderson for the UFC lightweight belt in Milwaukee at UFC 164.

Grant knows how it sounds, but he does not want to hear about your conspiracy theories.

He suffered the concussion during BJJ training. He told MMA Junkie that he took a shot in the head that he was surprised didn't knock him out, and then kept rolling and took another one. It kept him out of training for a month.

"We just kept rolling after the first shot. From that point, later on in the roll he went for a sweep, and like I always would, I used my head to post out and stop it. That was right at the end of the roll, and after that I knew that I rattled my brain a little bit. I never really had a concussion that I can remember. I've never felt anything close to it, but it is what it is. I fought Gray a couple weeks before, and he hit me a couple of times, too. So who knows?"

Concussions don't have a regular timetable for recovery. They're not like a torn ACL or broken arm, where experience says how long it takes to heal. Every concussion is different, and training before an athlete is ready can be disastrous.

As for any ideas that Grant was paid to drop the fight so the UFC could put in Pettis, a Milwaukee native, it doesn't make much sense. If there was going to be a bait-and-switch, wouldn't it be smarter to start with Pettis, and once tickets were sold, slide in the lesser-known Grant?

Persuasive Litigator: Note the (Small) Difference a Female Jury Can ...

[unable to retrieve full-text content]While there were numerous issues driving interest in this trial -- racial profiling, concealed carry laws, and the stand-your-ground defense among others -- the jury itself carried a special source of fascination for court ... Over the weekend, the jury in the George Zimmerman case acquitted the neighborhood watchman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, evidently concluding that the prosecution failed to disprove the Defendant's self-defense claim under Florida law.

Sony Live With The Walkman : Phone is restarting continuously

I have a problem with my Sony Live With The WalkMan phone, it has Android 4.0 (ICS) and was working well before last week, the problem started a week before when I tried turning on my phone's Bluetooth. When I turn it on, my phone just restarts, and the things happened around 10 times and stopped. Again I turned my phone on and then everything was normal until I found that my Bluetooth is showing me "Turning on.." and I just couldn't turn it off, so I restarted the phone again, and now its starting and restarting continuously! I don't know what's wrong with the Bluetooth and my phone? Does anyone have any idea?

My Blog: Essay On Public Speaking Skills,Preparation Of A Speech

Essay On Public Speaking Skills,Preparation Of A Speech

Public speaking is an art; and like every other art, it has to be learnt, both in practice and theory. For a man to say that he will never deliver a speech. until he has learnt to speak, is like saying that he will never go into the water until he has learnt to swim. One cannot learn to speak in public without speaking in public. In both cases, one has to learn by practice; and no amount of theory without practice will be of any avail.

A speech should always be carefully prepared beforehand. Preparation includes collection, selection and arrangement. First, collect materials for the speech -- ideas, arguments, facts, illustrations bearing on the subject. Jot these down as they come to mind. Then select the most appropriate, rejecting the rest. Lastly, arrange the selected thoughts in an orderly and logical plan. Without all this, the speech with be badly arranged. rambling. disproportioned and full of repetitions. At first it is a good thing to write the speech out in full; for -writing maketh an exact man".

The written speech , however, should never be learnt by heart. Memorizing is a fatal mistake. It turns the speech into a mere recitation; and reciting is not nearly so effective as speaking direct to the audience. Then, the reciter is bound hand and foot by his memorized words; whereas a speaker must be free to alter, omit, Or
add as he sees his audience requires it. Lastly, there is the danger of collapse. If the verbal memory fails, and the next sentence is forgotten, the speaker is lost and he may break down in the middle of his speech. Let the points of the speech and the order in which they come be kept clear in the mind; the actual words will come as they are wanted.

In public speaking the management of the voice is very important. Some speakers speak too low and cannot be heard well in a large hall. Some shout, and their voices are drowned by the echoes. Some talk so fast that they cannot be followed; and some speak so slowly as to tire their hearers' patience. The speaker should speak clearly, for all to hear; he should vary the intonation of his voice to avoid monotony and to enforce his meaning; and he should know when to make effective pauses.

Above all, a speaker should watch his audience and speak to it directly, so as to -get across" to his hearers what he wants to say as ?persuasively and convincingly as possible.

Middletown Military Museum Raising Money For Veterans Park Location

MIDDLETOWN ? The Greater Middletown Military Museum will soon begin raising money to contribute toward a plan to build a new museum building at Veterans Memorial Park.

The museum's committee is rethinking plans made last year to use a modular building purchased from a local company, and instead will focus on a custom-built facility to meet the needs of the museum, said Ron Organek, the group's president.

Last year, the State Bond Commission approved a $300,000 allocation to the museum to help build its new location, which is planned to be one of the many features in a major overhaul of Veterans Memorial Park.

"We want to have a nice-looking building in the park up there because it's a park designed for veterans. In fact the park is dedicated to World War II veterans," Organek said. "Everything really right now is very up in the air as far as [the museum] goes. We will be quite flexible about where we end up in the park."

The museum had a temporary home for about a year in an outbuilding next to the Eckersley-Hall Building, the former St. Sebastian School which will be the future Middletown Senior Center.

The Greater Middletown Military Museum has a collection of uniforms, memorabilia, documents and a library of nearly 1,000 books on military history, Organek said.

Plans last year called for putting a prefabricated building purchased from ModSpace, a local company, for a gallery and archives. But the committee has opted to pursue a more flexible structure, Organek said.

"ModSpace has some really nice buildings, but we prefer to go with a stick-built building," he said.

The museum is one of two groups that are guaranteed to be included in the park's overhaul, said Councilman Todd Berch, chairman of a committee appointed earlier this year to oversee a plan for Veterans Memorial Park. The other is the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial, which will be the state's memorial to soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 and the focal point of the park.

Other features could include playgrounds, a dog park, an expanded pavilion and a canoe and kayak launch.

"Basically, we have a blank canvas in front of us," Berch said. "It's the people's park, so we want the public's input and of course the veterans' input. There are a lot of ideas going on at the same time, so it's a neat commission."

Berch said the committee's goal is to present a consensus for the park's layout to the common council, which would then assign a building committee and figure out how to fund the park overhaul.

There will be a public hearing for residents to offer suggestions for the park's features at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28 in the Hubbard Room at Russell Library.
