Texas Tech rallies to beat Minnesota 34-31 at Reliant Stadium

HOUSTON (AP) -- D.J. Johnson returned an interception 39 yards and Ryan Bustin made a 28-yard field goal as time expired to give Texas Tech a 34-31 comeback victory over Minnesota on Friday night in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Seth Doege found Eric Ward on a short pass, and he outran a defender for a 35-yard scoring play to tie it at 31 with just more than a minute remaining.

Michael Carter intercepted two of Doege?s passes in the fourth quarter before the tying score, but Minnesota couldn?t convert either of the turnovers into points.

The Red Raiders (8-5) got their third straight bowl win to wrap up a month that began with coach Tommy Tuberville?s abrupt departure for the job at Cincinnati. Texas Tech has hired Kliff Kingsbury to replace him, but interim coach Chris Thomsen led the team against Minnesota (6-7). Kingsbury was at the game, watching from a suite.

Christian Slater movie makes just $264

By Randee Dawn, NBC News contributor

Hollywood may be going gangbusters with a record-setting year at the box office, but not every film can be a "Hobbit," "Dark Knight Rises" or "Skyfall."?Some film's going to have to be at the bottom of that barrel.

And it appears, based on data from The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, that "Playback," starring Christian Slater, is that last-place finisher for 2012. The film, which reportedly cost $7.5 million to make, took in $252 on opening night, plus another $12 later that week, according to Movieline, for a grand total of $264.

That makes it the lowest-grossing film of the year -- but bear in mind it was just in one theater, for one week. Perhaps more embarrassing are wider-released movies that still tanked, such as "The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure," which now holds the record as the lowest-grossing wide release of all time, according to The Huffington Post. "Oogieloves" earned $1.1 million gross, says The Numbers, averaging just $207 per theater (it opened in 2,160 theaters originally).

And "Playback's" box office return is exponentially bigger than what is largely considered the lowest-grossing American film release; in 2006, the Katherine Heigl-starring "Zyzzyx Road" showed in one theater in Texas for seven days. The $750,000 budgeted film took in $30, according to Entertainment Weekly.

In the case of "Zyzzyx," the release was always meant to be short-term -- thanks to a Screen Actors Guild agreement, low-budget films can pay their actors less if the film gets released domestically. That made the Dallas, Tex. screening a formality.

There's no indication that was the idea behind "Playback," however.

Dozens killed in air strike on Syrian bakery

Activists say dozens, possibly hundreds, were killed during an air strike on a bakery in central Syria Sunday. A large crowd had been waiting in line at the bakery to buy bread.

Dozens of people were killed and wounded in an air strike on a bakery in?Syria's central Hama province on Sunday, activists said, with some reporting up to 200 dead.

"There is no way to really know yet how many people were killed. When I got there, I could see piles of bodies all over the ground. There were women and children," said Samer al-Hamawi, an activist in the town of?Halfaya, where the strike hit. "There are also dozens of wounded people"

Halfaya?was seized by rebels last week as part of a campaign to push into new territories in the 21-month-old revolt against President?Bashar al-Assad.

Another?activist said residents picking through the bodies were still determining which were wounded and which were dead.

Hamawi, who spoke via?Skype, uploaded a video of the scene, which showed dozens of dust-coated bodies lined up near a pile of rubble by a concrete building, its walls blackened.

The sounds of people screaming could be heard in the video, as some men rushed to the scene on motorcycles and other residents limped away from the area.

The authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified. The government restricts media access in?Syria.

Activists said more than a thousand people had been queuing at the bakery. Shortages of fuel and flour have made bread production erratic across the country, and people often wait for hours to buy bread.

New York-based?Human Rights Watch?condemned army air strikes on bakeries earlier this year, arguing that in some incidents the military was not using enough precision to target rebel sites and in other instances may have intentionally hit civilians.

"We hadn't received flour in around three days so everyone was going to the bakery today, and lots of them were women and children," Hamawi said. "I still don't know yet if my relatives are among the dead."

Google trials shipping, flight and event tracking in search results

Google trials shipping, flight and event tracking in search results

It's not quite Google Now in your browser, but the latest search experiment from the internet giant certainly blurs the line between its mobile personal assistant and its desktop search product. The company has been testing showing Gmail-based results in your search sidebar for months, but now it's actually parsing those snippets for relevant information. If you opt in to the trial, simply searching for "my orders" will spit out a history of your recent purchases along with tracking info. You'll get similar cards (yep, cards, just like in Now) if you search for "my events," "my flights," "my hotel reservations," or "my restaurant reservations." Slowly but surely Google is becoming not just a way to search the web, but an indispensable way to track all of the disparate chunks of information that make up your daily life. To sign up for the field trial hit up the source link.

AP Sources: USOC keeping potential host bid alive

The U.S. Olympic Committee will move forward with exploring a bid to host a future Olympics without making a commitment to an actual bid, people familiar with Thursday's board meeting tell The Associated Press.

The board approved a proposal from a committee formed to examine bids for either the 2024 Summer or 2026 Winter Olympics. The committee recommended the board move forward with the exploratory process without necessarily committing to a bid.

People familiar with the meetings spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the quarterly board meeting was still in session and the group's actions hadn't been made public.

The United States hasn't hosted the Olympics since 2002. Its last bid came for the 2016 Summer Games and the bid city, Chicago, finished last in the voting.

Said Virtuoso Legal Marketing partner, Brad Hart, ?I believe the new website does a much better job of conveying our message, which centers around gaining a competitive advantage through the use of aggressive online promotion. We also believe the website is easier to navigate and provides more value to our visitors.?

Virtuoso Legal Marketing is a full service provider of?Internet marketing-related services of law firms. Originally an offshoot of its parent company, Work Media LLC, Virtuoso can help law firms through the complete Internet marketing cycle ? research, website development, search engine optimization, local search optimization, paid search marketing, social media marketing, and most recently, mobile app development.

?It has always bothered us the way the big companies in this industry treat their clients. The kicker is that what they consider SEO is often nothing more than cross-linking their own clients,? said Hart. ?That?s why we operate differently. We offer market exclusivity and we do things the right way. That?s why the tagline on our new website says ?Complete Web Strategy Management?. Hopefully our new website effectively conveys these differences.?

Sceptre teases 2013 lineup that includes nearborderless TVs, sound bar with WiFi

Sceptre isn't waiting for CES to give a peek at what its home theater roster will bring. This year, the budget-focused company is hoping to take on the extra-minimalist TVs we've seen from Samsung and LG. Its 32- to 55-inch Rimless series wraps an LED-backlit LCD with a 4mm-thick bezel. Some of its overall TV line should also have MHL-capable HDMI ports to take video from mobile devices or a Roku Streaming Stick. Scepter's audio focus may be the most unique part of its lineup, however: it should have the first compact, 2.1-channel sound bar with WiFi, turning older TVs into connected models. There's more coming, including a 1080p in-car camera, so check after the break for the lineup we know so far.

Camera Catches Woman Stealing Decorations From North Texas Home

Christmas decorations swiped right from a house in North Texas. The person doing it was caught on camera but not caught yet by police.

The Starnes family in Aledo, west of Fort Worth, was hit not once but twice in one week.

The family's security camera caught the thief taking a holiday wreath off the front door and then walking off to her truck. (See video above.)

"I think it's scary that a grown woman would feel the need to do that.
That she would walk up to the front door and take something," Ashley Starnes said.

Watch the video on the upper right corner of your screen, the bold thief unplugs an extension cord and starts taking out two strands of lights.

The Starnes were surprised to find this video on their home surveillance system.

But a week later, the woman was back for more lights. This time you can see her red four-door pick up in the upper part of your screen.
"We are not going to contribute to her Christmas light stash anymore. Everything is gone," Jon Starnes said.

Thieves stole outdoor decorations on at least five homes in the Aledo area within the last two weeks. Investigators are not sure if the woman is responsible for all the thefts but now have this video as evidence.

"She did not look scared. She was not in a rush. She was not worried," Ashley Starnes said.

The Starnes just want her caught before another families Christmas spirit is stolen.

"There is really not another word I have other than pity," Jon Starnes said.? "I hope she doesn't step foot in the wrong yard it may make somebody else a lot madder than me."

That's what deputies worry about that someone would hurt the woman while protecting their property.

37 dead in Ukraine from cold spell

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukrainian health officials say 37 people have died from the severe cold spell that hit the country this month.

Temperatures have dropped as low as minus-17 C (2 F).

The Health Ministry said Tuesday that 190 people have sought medical help for hypothermia, of which 162 people have been hospitalized.

No health official would say how the deaths occurred, but victims in previous cold spells have been mostly the homeless and elderly people. Authorities have set up some 1,500 centers around the country to provide food and shelter.

The cold weather comes as heavy snowfall in the eastern European nation blocked key roads, leaving hundreds of cars stranded.

Top 9 Causes Of Pre-Wedding Jitters | World of Psychology

Top 9 Causes Of Pre-Wedding Jitters This guest article from YourTango was written by?Ashley Seeger.

Are you feeling anxious about your upcoming wedding? Sick to your stomach? Having bad dreams? Does the sight of the dress fill you with dread? Feeling like you may have made a mistake saying ?yes? or proposing?

If you answered yes, you are experiencing pre-wedding jitters. This is your subconscious telling you that something is not right and you need to listen to it. It may be that you are nervous about your own ability to be a husband or wife, anxious that your fianc? can?t be the spouse you need or both.

Having wedding jitters does not mean that the marriage is doomed or that it is time to call off the wedding. But all jitters mean that an intervention is needed. Something is making you anxious and you need to understand what it is.

We all have an internal compass that guides us in our life and when we go against it, there is a reaction. At first, you feel a gentle tugging at the back of your brain; something does not feel right. You feel ?off.? If you pay attention to this feeling, the cause or causes will slowly become clear. But if you don?t pay attention, your subconscious will get louder and louder and the bad feelings begin to turn to physical symptoms ? you may have bad dreams, difficulty sleeping, stomach issues, illness or even injuries.

I have worked with many brides and grooms who have had jitters and some that have had physical symptoms of anxiety and stress about their upcoming nuptials. The work is focused on finding the cause of their ?jitters? so they can clearly see what action is needed.

I have outlined my own list of the main causes for wedding jitters. I hope it will help you to begin to understand where your anxiety comes from so that you can begin to take action and have the wedding and marriage you want.

1. The wedding day. Sometimes it is the wedding day itself that is the cause of anxiety. Having one?s entire family together for a day or weekend can cause a great deal of anxiety especially when there are divorces, step-parents, estranged family members or just one particularly difficult family member. For other brides or grooms, wedding-day stress is about being in the spotlight.

One bride I know, who was anxious about being at the center of attention, decided to get rid of the aisle at her wedding. She and her fianc? walked together into the middle of the cocktail reception and said their vows surrounded by friends and family. Your wedding does not have to be conventional ? you can set it up so that it works for you.

In all instances, I believe that getting support for your wedding day is essential. A counselor or wedding planner can help you create a plan for dealing with difficult family members and organize your day so that you feel safe and connected with your spouse.

2. Becoming a ?wife? or ?husband.? Our parent?s marriage is our blueprint for our own marriage. We learn from them how to argue, how to ask for our needs and how to negotiate power in an intimate relationship. Some of us did not get an ideal blueprint to follow; we come from broken homes, homes filled with anger, violence, shame or neglect or homes where there is little or no emotional intimacy.

Sometimes, when we become engaged the fear that we will become just like our mom or dad is overwhelming. It is important to remember that you do not have to mirror your blueprint. You can choose any type of relationship you want. But, if you do not actively choose a different way of connecting or expressing anger, you will go on autopilot and fall back on familiar behaviors.

If this sounds like what you are feeling then what you need is to gain an understanding of your past so you can clearly define your future. Get support around understanding your own blueprint so you can then decide what you want to keep and what pieces of your parent?s marriage you want to get rid of. Once you have this, you and your fianc? can openly discuss your plan, goals and dreams for the marriage.

3. What is the plan? Have you talked through the BIG items with your intended? A few of these big items include: do we want kids and when; where do we want to live; how much money do we plan to make; how will we budget; how much time will we spend with our extended families; who is staying home with the kids; how ambitious are we individually and how are we going to make room in the relationship for this ambition.

When you talk through all of these questions, a picture or plan for your marriage emerges. Many couples don?t discuss their overall plan before they get married because they either don?t know how to or because they already know there is a conflict and they don?t know how to find a resolution.

If you have not discussed the big questions with your fianc? this may be a source of your wedding jitters. There can be the illusion that these conflicts will all ?work themselves out.? I will tell you from personal as well as professional experience that they don?t. But I do know that your anxiety will be greatly relieved by beginning this conversation. Consider finding a workbook or a couples counselor who can guide you through this discussion, help you set goals for yourselves and teach you the communication skills you need to negotiate when your desires or needs differ.

4. Violence or the threat of violence. Violence is never OK. It is never, ever, ever, ever OK.?If there has been violence, threats of violence or shaming or controlling behavior in your relationship, you need to seek the support of a therapist to better understand the dynamics of the abuse and why you choose to stay.

If you are questioning the relationship because there has been abusive behavior in the past, please listen to your instincts. Slow things down and find some support. Abuse rarely only occurs once. It is a pattern of behavior that cycles through wonderful times and then abusive or controlling times. It will happen again unless there is an intervention.?

Microsoft Xbox Updates SmartGlass App For ESPN And NBA Game ...

It wasn?t long ago that Microsoft announced its SmartGlass second-screen app, which gives users better control of their viewing experience by connecting the Xbox game console with mobile and tablet devices. Now the company is trying to use the experience to court sports fans, with updates for its ESPN and NBA Game Time apps, as well as the launch of a new Sports Picks experience.

With its SmartGlass apps for Windows, Android, and iOS devices, Microsoft enables users to navigate and control the content that they want to watch from their smartphones and tablets instead of using the game controller to do so. Since these touch-screen interfaces are generally more intuitive to use, the interface provides a better user experience than other control mechanisms.

As it applies to ESPN and NBA Game Time, the new SmartGlass experience will allow users to browse through various videos of live events and highlight reels, select the ones they want to watch, and then send those videos to the Xbox for viewing.

The SmartGlass second-screen experience also allows for more interactivity with the content that people are watching. And that?s where the new Sports Picks app comes in. The Sports Picks experience will let viewers compete against their friends and others to show off how savvy they are about the games they?re watching. That will put them up against their Xbox Live friends, as well as others on a global leaderboard.

Microsoft is no longer positioning the Xbox as a game console, but as a hub for all the media center that goes through the home. Since sports is a big part of what keeps people watching TV live, adding these enhancements will hopefully get its users even more engaged.

The Xbox 360 is Microsoft?s 2nd generation game console.

Washington Targets Syria and Iran

by

Washington Targets Syria and Iran

by Stephen Lendman

US policies threaten both nations. Doing so imperils the region and beyond. Syria's now in focus. Iran's turn awaits.

What's likely should terrify everyone wanting America's imperium defeated and peace restored. Doing so remains a distant dream. Potential worst of times loom.

On December 17, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa saying continuing armed conflict favors neither side.

Opposition elements can't topple Assad without creating endless violence and chaos, he stressed.

He urged conflict resolution and national unity. "We are not protecting some particular person or regime. We are fighting for the very existence of Syria," he explained.

Elements committing crimes in Syria, and nations supporting them, lost all national, moral, and humane sense, he said. Government forces are duty-bound to restore and preserve public safety.

The longer conflict continues, the harder peaceful resolution becomes. He has no simple solutions to propose. Both sides must commit to find them.

Washington, key NATO partners, Israel, and regional allies maintain hidebound policies. They support continued conflict. They want Syria destroyed. They want Assad replaced by pro-Western extremists. Most Syrians deplore them.

He thanked Syria's real friends. He named Iran, Hezbollah's Hasan Nasrallah, Russia and China.

On December 17, Voice of Russia (VoR) discussed a December 17-18 Rome conference. More than 30 internal and external interests are involved.

Moscow hopes discussions may smooth the way for constructive conflict-ending dialogue. Hope springs eternal. Fulfillment remains distant.

The National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change (NCC) organized the conference. Its members favor peaceful conflict resolution. They reject continuing violence. They deplore outside elements pursuing violence and destruction.

Moscow Middle East expert Said Gafurov is cautiously optimistic. The conference may "contribute to resolving the Syrian gridlock," he said.

It's "an important step because it may help participants to sit down for parleys with the government."

"It?s hard to say whether the conference will see any breakthroughs, but I don?t rule out that the gathering will at least pave the way for isolating irreconcilable militants."

At the same time, FSA elements "want power, not democracy." They're "loath to consider the fact that at least 60 percent of the Syrian population supports" Assad.

After many months of conflict, the vast majority likely support him. He's their last line of defense. Without him, they're at the mercy of Washington-recruited Islamofascist killers.

They want their will forcibly imposed. They reject peace talks. They take orders from Washington. America's in charge. US officials plot what type future they plan for Syrians.

Moscow-based Institute for Middle Eastern and Israeli Studies head Yevgeny Satanovsky added:

"Some opposition activists are really poised for talks free from foreign interference."

"Most opposition figures, including those from the Free Syrian Army (FSA), are oriented towards outside forces and the fall of the Assad regime."

"They call for the physical liquidation of President Assad and his family members, as well as representatives of religious and confessional minorities whom they describe as 'heretics.' "

Elements in Rome hope fruitful discussion will be prelude for a late December Cairo conference. Some see a chance to open dialogue between Assad and moderate opposition forces wanting peace.

On December 16, SANA quoted Nasrallah saying:

"Whoever thinks that the armed opposition in Syria is capable of resolving things militarily on the ground is mistaken.

Insurgents can't emerge victorious, he added. Western nations lured Al Qaeda and other extremist fighters to Syria. They sent them on a fool's errand.

"I warned Al-Qaida. The Americans and the European countries and Arab and Islamic countries have set a trap for you in Syria, and opened for you a battlefield so you come from across the world to be killed and to kill each other."

Days earlier, Russia denied one of its senior diplomats said Assad is losing control of his country.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was misquoted. Media scoundrels claimed Moscow believed he was doomed. His real assessment was:

"The fighting will become even more intense, and (Syria) will lose tens of thousands and, perhaps, hundreds of thousands of civilians."

"If such a price for the removal of the president seems acceptable to you, what can we do? We, of course, consider it absolutely unacceptable."

Russia's Foreign Ministry said Bogdanov "has not made any statements or (given) special interviews recently." His comments were made in a recent speech.

On December 17, senior Iranian lawmaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel condemned Washington and Western allies. He denounced their double standard hypocrisy on Iran's nuclear program.

"If you are concerned about (it), why do you support the Zionist regime which does not abide by UN resolutions," he asked?

Tehran fully complies with NPT provisions, he stressed. Israel spurns them. No evidence whatever suggests an Iranian nuclear weapons program. High US, other Western, and Israeli officials know but won't say.

Israel's had a powerful arsenal for decades. It's the region's only nuclear power. It threatens to use them if endangered. It refuses inspections.

Iran's UN ambassador, Mohammad Khazayee, earlier denounced Israel's refusal to join NPT and allow IAEA inspections.

"Iran considers Israel as the prime suspect in the field of possessing nuclear weapons and not abiding by the NPT. The international community should exert pressure on the Zionist regime to join the NPT," he added.

On December 17, Haaretz/Reuters headlined "Iran FM: Tehran, world powers must end impasse over nuclear program," saying:

FM Ali Akbar Salehi said both sides "reached a conclusion that they must exit the current stalemate." More talks are needed. Serious ones. He expects them. He's not sure when.

Washington obstructed earlier P5+1 talks. Successful future ones depends on cutting that gordian knot. They also depend on recognizing Iran's right to pursue nuclear power generation peacefully.

Its program replicates dozens of other countries. Iran alone is criticized. Doing so is red herring cover for regime change. Tehran wants its rights respected. It wants lawless sanctions ended.

Its sovereignty is inviolable. It won't surrender to Washington, other Western nations and Israel.

Reports suggest possible new talks early next year. Unless conducted constructively, they'll fail like earlier ones.

On December 15, Mossad-connected DEBKAfile (DF) claimed Washington and Tehran held "secret one-on-one" talks. They failed.

Resolution isn't possible as long as America remains obstructionist. DF quoted senior Iranian negotiator Mostafa Dolatyar saying talks went nowhere.

Washington demands Iran relinquish its legitimate right to enrich uranium to 20%. He added that world powers "made certain connections with purely technical issues and something purely political."

As long as this attitude holds, resolution isn't possible.

DF said US/Iranian talks were held in Lausanne, Switzerland. They began on December 1. Dolatyar heads Iran's Foreign Ministry Political and International Studies think tank.

He's also a senior nuclear negotiator. His remarks carry weight. They're authorized by the highest level's of Iran's government.

DF cited a December 5 Wall Street Journal article. It's titled "From Bushehr to the Bomb." It attracted little attention. It deserved none.

It said Washington began monitoring Bushehr more closely "after Iran had unexpectedly removed fuel rods containing between 22 and 220 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium."

America earlier claimed Bushehr posed little proliferation risk.

At the same time, uranium isn't the only bomb-making material. "Iran has long been at work on a plutonium-breeding heavy-water reactor in the city of Arak."

Tehran says it's for research. Bushehr spent fuel rods are supposed to be returned to Russia for storage. In October, they were removed. Iran says they were returned to the core reactor.

The Journal's bottom line is that Iran produced enough plutonium for "24 Nagasaki-type bombs." No evidence whatever suggests ??Iranian nuclear materials of any type are intended for bomb-making.

DF headlined the story. "Tehran can easily manufacture plutonium bombs without building a large" reactor like Arak. It cited baseless threats repeated many times before. They long ago wore thin.

DF, Netanyahu, other Israeli hardliners, and US ones never quit. Their claims lack credibility. No evidence supports them.

At the same time, nuclear expert Helen Caldicott calls all nuclear plants atom bomb factories. A 1,000-megawatt reactor produces 500 pounds of plutonium annually.

Ten pounds can produce a bomb able to destroy a large city. At least 53 countries operate nuclear reactors. Most do solely for power generation and other peaceful purposes.

Regional nations alone include Algeria, Egypt, Niger, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, UAE, and, of course, Israel and Iran.

Tehran alone is called threatening. Israel's menace is ignored. So are Iran's peaceful intentions. Having the ability to produce bomb-related material falls way short of proving intent. DF and the Journal left that unexplained.

A Final Comment

Over the weekend, reports said Pentagon authorities quietly recalled the USS Eisenhower battle group and USS Iwo Jima Amphibious ready group with 2,000 marines on board.

On December 19, they're expected home in Norfolk, VA. They've been stationed for weeks off Syria's coast. An unnamed flight deck problem was named. Repairs are needed.

One CVN (carrier/fixed wing-vice rotary wings/nuclear) remains in the Gulf.

The USS Nimitz was scheduled to replace the Eisenhower in January. It needs two month's work for flight deck resurfacing. The Roosevelt will be back in service soon. Several months are required to return three carrier groups to the Gulf.

Offensive Patriot missiles expected in place in January will replace sea power capability. Washington also has extensive air power nearby. So do Turkey and Israel. French and British warships have their own.

Pulling US naval power for now may delay US Syrian plans. It's hard knowing for sure. Continued conflict to oust Assad continues. Post-holiday season, what's next may be clearer.
